Clock changes

Forex hours are set by New York time: the week opens and closes at 5pm New York time. For most of the year that is 22:00 UK time. The UK and the US change their clocks on different dates, so for a few weeks a year it is 21:00 UK instead. In 2026 the UK went back on 25 October and the US on 1 November, so the week of 26 to 31 October closed at 21:00 UK. In 2027 the US moves forward on 14 March and the UK on 28 March, so those two weeks also close at 21:00 UK. US data at 8:30am New York time lands at 13:30 UK for most of the year and 12:30 in the gap weeks. Your chart times follow your broker's server clock, which many brokers set two hours ahead of UK winter time so each daily candle starts at the 5pm New York rollover. Singapore does not change its clocks, so Singapore news shifts by an hour in UK time when the UK changes.

What is USD/SGD?

USD/SGD is the price of one US dollar in Singapore dollars. A price of 1.3000 means one dollar buys 1.30 Singapore dollars. If the price rises, the US dollar is strengthening; if it falls, the Singapore dollar is strengthening.

Singapore's central bank, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), does not set an interest rate. It manages the Singapore dollar against a basket of its trading partners' currencies (called the S$NEER) inside an unpublished band, which tends to keep the pair calmer than many exotics. Singapore is a major trading centre: the BIS found it handled 11.8% of world currency trading in April 2025. Spreads are still typically wider than on the majors.

Contract facts

One point or pip

One pip is 0.0001 (the fourth decimal place). Most brokers quote a fifth decimal, a tenth of a pip, often called a pipette or point.

Typical CFD lot

1 standard lot = 100,000 US dollars. A mini lot (0.1) is 10,000 and a micro lot (0.01) is 1,000.

What a point is worth

One pip on 1 standard lot is worth 10 Singapore dollars (100,000 x 0.0001). On a mini lot it is 1 Singapore dollars. Your broker converts that into your account currency at the current rate.

Exchange futures

Futures on the Singapore dollar are not widely used by retail traders; most use spot or CFDs.

How far it usually moves

Varies; check the Average daily range indicator. It averages the distance from each day's high to its low (by default over the last 14 days) and draws the expected high and low for today. We do not quote a fixed number because the range changes with news and volatility.

What moves USD/SGD

MAS policy

Changes to the slope, width or centre of the S$NEER band, announced in the quarterly Monetary Policy Statement.

The broad dollar

Because the Singapore dollar is managed against a basket, USD/SGD often tracks the US dollar's move against Asian currencies.

Chinese yuan

China is a major trading partner, so moves in USD/CNH tend to spill over.

Singapore inflation

Core inflation guides what MAS does with the band.

US data and the Fed

US jobs, inflation and Federal Reserve decisions move the dollar side.

Scheduled events to watch

Singapore morning, overnight UK time / Evening before NYMAS Monetary Policy Statement

Four a year (January, April, July, October); the next is due no later than 29 January 2027.

Early UK morning / Overnight NYSingapore consumer price inflation (CPI)

Monthly; MAS watches core inflation when setting the band.

19:00 (18:00 in the gap weeks) UK / 14:00 NYUS Federal Reserve (FOMC) interest rate decision

The US rate sets the price of the dollar side of the pair; next decision 9 December 2026, then 27 January 2027.

13:30 (12:30 in the gap weeks) UK / 08:30 NYUS jobs report (non farm payrolls)

Usually the first Friday of the month (next: 6 November and 4 December 2026) and often the biggest dollar mover of the month.

13:30 (12:30 in the gap weeks) UK / 08:30 NYUS consumer price inflation (CPI)

Monthly, usually mid month; a surprise shifts expectations for the Federal Reserve.

What it tends to move with

USD/CNH

Tends to move in the same direction as the US dollar against the offshore Chinese yuan.

US Dollar Index (DXY)

Tends to rise when the dollar strengthens broadly, usually by less.

Caution

These are tendencies, not rules. MAS policy changes can shift the pair on their own.

Tips for trading USD/SGD

1

Account for the spread

Spreads on USD/SGD are wider than on the majors, so a stop that would be fine on EUR/USD can be too tight here. If the stop needs to sit beyond a real level, cut the lot size; the idea is wrong if price closes beyond that level.

2

Expect smaller swings

The managed band tends to dampen moves, so breakouts can stall. A breakout idea is wrong if price closes back inside the previous day's range.

3

Follow the dollar

Check EUR/USD and USD/CNH. A USD/SGD long while the dollar is falling elsewhere is weaker; it is wrong if price closes below the low of the setup candle.

4

Plan around MAS

On statement days, wait for the first 15 minute candle after the release to close. A break of its high or low is the idea; a close back through the other side proves it wrong.

Questions traders ask

What is the best time to trade USD/SGD from the UK?

The Singapore working day, about 01:00 to 09:00 UK in the UK winter, is the home session. The London and New York overlap, 13:00 to 17:00 UK, is the other active window. Late New York hours are quiet.

Does Singapore have an interest rate decision?

No. The Monetary Authority of Singapore manages the Singapore dollar against a basket of currencies (the S$NEER) inside a band, and announces any change in a quarterly Monetary Policy Statement. The next is due no later than 29 January 2027.

How much is one pip on USD/SGD?

One pip is 0.0001. On 1 standard lot of 100,000 US dollars it is worth 10 Singapore dollars, which your broker converts to your account currency.

Is USD/SGD an exotic pair?

Most brokers class it as exotic because the Singapore dollar is a smaller currency than the majors, so spreads are usually wider. It tends to be calmer than many exotics because MAS manages it within a band.

Does USD/SGD trade at weekends?

No. USD/SGD typically closes on Friday at 22:00 UK time and reopens on Sunday at 22:00 UK time. News over the weekend can make Sunday's first price differ from Friday's close, which is called a gap.
