Clock changes

Most of the year London is 5 hours ahead of New York, so the UK times above hold. The US and UK change clocks on different Sundays: in 2026 the US moved forward on 8 March and the UK on 29 March, and the UK moved back on 25 October and the US on 1 November. In those gap weeks (roughly the second half of March and the last week of October) London is only 4 hours ahead, so every New York based time on this page happens one hour earlier on a UK clock. In 2027 the gaps run from 14 to 28 March and from 31 October to 7 November. Times on your broker's chart follow its server clock, which is often set to GMT+2 in winter and GMT+3 in summer so that the daily candle closes at 17:00 New York time. Check your broker's own contract page.

What is US30 (Dow Jones Industrial Average)?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is one of the oldest US stock indices. It tracks 30 large, well known US companies, chosen by a committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices. Unlike most indices, it is price weighted: a company with a higher share price moves the index more than one with a lower share price, whatever the size of the company.

The official index is only calculated while the New York stock market is open. Outside those hours, the US30 price you see at your broker follows the E-mini Dow futures (YM), which trade on CME Group almost around the clock. That is why US30 can move overnight even though the stock market is shut.

The trading sessions

23:00 to 07:00 UKAsia

Typically quieter, with smaller candles. Moves often come from overnight news or Asian markets.

07:00 to 13:30 UKLondon

Activity picks up as European traders arrive. Futures can set the day's first real high or low here.

13:30 to 16:30 UKLondon and New York overlap

Typically the busiest stretch: US data at 13:30 UK, the cash open at 14:30 UK and both centres trading at once.

14:30 to 21:00 UKNew York

The stock market session. Moves tend to slow around midday New York time and pick up again into the 21:00 UK close.

Contract facts

One point or pip

One point is a move of 1.0 in the index level (for example from 45,000.0 to 45,001.0). Prices are often shown to one or two decimals.

Typical CFD lot

Index CFD lot sizes differ between brokers. A common setup is 1 lot = 1 contract worth 1 unit of the index currency per point, but some brokers use 10 per point or 0.1 per point. Check the contract specification in your platform.

What a point is worth

On a CFD where 1 lot is worth 1 US dollar per point, a 1 point move on 1 lot is worth 1 dollar. On one E-mini Dow futures contract a 1 point move is worth 5 dollars.

Exchange futures

E-mini Dow futures (YM) on CME Group: 5 US dollars times the index, minimum move 1 point. Micro E-mini Dow futures (MYM) are 0.50 dollars times the index.

How far it usually moves

Varies with conditions; check the Average daily range indicator on WickSpeak for the current figure. We have not published a fixed number because we could not verify one from an official source.

What moves US30 (Dow Jones Industrial Average)

Earnings from the 30 members: results from big names can move the whole index, especially the highest priced shares.

US interest rate expectations: higher expected rates tend to weigh on share prices.

US economic data: jobs, inflation and business surveys shift views on growth and rates.

Federal Reserve decisions and speeches.

Bond yields: a sharp rise in US Treasury yields often weighs on stocks.

Global risk mood: wars, trade disputes and crises tend to push traders out of shares.

Price weighting: because the Dow is price weighted, one large move in a high priced share can lift or drag the whole index.

What it tends to move with

S&P 500 (US500): usually moves in the same direction as US30 through the day.

NAS100: tends to move the same way, but technology heavy days can see NAS100 move much more than US30.

US 10 year Treasury yields: sharp rises in yields have tended to weigh on US indices.

Gold: sometimes moves the opposite way on risk-off days, but not reliably.

Tips for trading US30 (Dow Jones Industrial Average)

1

Mark the high and low of the first 15 minutes after 14:30 UK. A close above that high is a long idea; a close back inside the range proves it wrong.

2

Be careful just before 13:30 UK on data days and at 14:30 UK at the cash open. Spreads can widen and moves can reverse fast.

3

Use points for stops and targets. Set the stop beyond a recent swing high or low, and if that distance is more than a large share of the average daily range, reduce size.

4

Watch the previous day's close and the overnight high and low. A rejection at the overnight high is a short idea; a 5 minute close above it proves it wrong.

5

Remember the daily break at 22:00 UK. Price can jump when trading resumes at 23:00 UK.
