Trading hours
AUD/NZD typically trades from Sunday 22:00 to Friday 22:00 UK time (5pm to 5pm New York time), with no daily break beyond a brief pause at some brokers around the 22:00 UK rollover. Times on your chart follow your broker's server clock.
| When | UK time | New York time | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly open | Sunday 22:00 (21:00 in the gap weeks) | Sunday 17:00 | Typically, at most CFD brokers. Wellington and Sydney are already in their Monday morning. Spreads are often wide in the first minutes and there can be a gap from Friday's close. |
| Daily rollover | 22:00 each weekday (21:00 in the gap weeks) | 17:00 | The trading day ends and overnight financing (swap) is charged. There is typically no long break, but spreads widen for a few minutes and some brokers pause quotes briefly. |
| Friday close | Friday 22:00 (21:00 in the gap weeks) | Friday 17:00 | Typically. Many brokers stop a few minutes early, for example Pepperstone closes all markets 5 minutes early on Fridays. Closed all of Saturday. |
| Busiest hours | 22:00 to 07:00 | 17:00 to 02:00 | Typically. New Zealand and Australian business hours, when both countries release data and both central banks announce. |
Forex hours follow New York time: the week opens on Sunday and closes on Friday at 5pm New York time. For most of the year that is 22:00 UK. The US and UK change clocks on different Sundays, so in the gap weeks it is 21:00 UK. In autumn 2026 the UK moved back on 25 October and the US on 1 November; in spring 2027 the US moves forward on 14 March and the UK on 28 March, so from 14 to 28 March the open, close and rollover are at 21:00 UK and US data at 8:30am New York time lands at 12:30 UK instead of 13:30. European releases (UK, eurozone and Swiss) stay at the same UK time all year, because those countries change clocks on the same dates as the UK. Australia changes its clocks the opposite way to the UK (Sydney moves forward on the first Sunday of October and back on the first Sunday of April), so Australian release times move by two hours on a UK clock across the year: 14:30 Sydney is 03:30 UK in UK winter and 05:30 UK in UK summer. New Zealand changes its clocks the opposite way to the UK (forward on the last Sunday of September, back on the first Sunday of April), so New Zealand releases move by two hours on a UK clock across the year. Times on your broker's chart follow its server clock, which many brokers set to GMT+2 in winter and GMT+3 in summer so the daily candle starts at the 5pm New York rollover. Check your broker's own contract page.
What is AUD/NZD?
AUD/NZD shows how many New Zealand dollars one Australian dollar buys. If it reads 1.1000, one Australian dollar costs 1.10 New Zealand dollars. The two economies are neighbours with similar exports and similar sensitivity to China and risk mood, so global news often moves both currencies the same way.
That makes AUD/NZD one of the slowest, most range bound crosses. It mostly moves when the RBA and the RBNZ are expected to take different paths, or when one country's data surprises. Nearly all of its news lands during the UK night.
The trading sessions
The pair's main session. RBNZ and RBA decisions and both countries' data come out here.
Usually slow. London trading in the pair is thinner because neither home market is open.
Usually quiet, unless a big US shock moves both currencies unequally.
Typically the pair's most active hours.
Contract facts
One pip is 0.0001 (the fourth decimal place). Most brokers quote one more decimal, a tenth of a pip, often called a pipette or point.
1 standard lot = 100,000 Australian dollars (the first currency in the pair). A mini lot (0.1) is 10,000 and a micro lot (0.01) is 1,000.
One pip (0.0001) on 1 standard lot is worth 10 New Zealand dollars (100,000 x 0.0001). On a mini lot (0.1) it is 1 New Zealand dollar and on a micro lot (0.01) it is 0.10 New Zealand dollars. Your platform converts it to your account currency at the current rate.
Most AUD/NZD trading happens in the spot market between banks and through CFDs. Cross rate futures volume is small, so CFD and spot prices are what most traders watch.

What moves AUD/NZD
Expectations for Australian interest rates drive the Australian dollar's side of AUD/NZD.
Australia sells iron ore, coal and gas, much of it to China, so Chinese demand and metal prices tend to lift or weigh on the Australian dollar.
Expectations for New Zealand interest rates drive the kiwi (the market's nickname for the New Zealand dollar).
Dairy is New Zealand's largest export, so Global Dairy Trade auction results can nudge the kiwi.
The Australian dollar tends to rise when global stocks are calm and climbing and fall when fear rises.
Like the Australian dollar, the kiwi tends to rise when markets are calm and fall when fear rises.
The pair moves most when traders expect the RBA and the RBNZ to set rates differently.

What it tends to move with
AUD/NZD rises when AUD/USD outpaces NZD/USD, since it is one divided by the other.
Firm metal prices with weak dairy prices tend to favour AUD/NZD, and the reverse tends to weigh on it.
Tips for trading AUD/NZD
Range trading
AUD/NZD often holds a range for weeks. A rejection at the range top is a short idea aiming at the middle; a daily close above the top proves it wrong.
Watch the policy gap
A surprise from the RBA or RBNZ can start a new trend. After a decision, a daily close beyond the range is a trend idea; a close back inside within two days proves it wrong.
Small moves, real costs
Daily moves are usually small, so the spread is a large share of each trade. If the spread is more than about a tenth of the average daily range, the trade may not be worth taking.
Avoid the UK afternoon
With both home markets shut, moves in the UK afternoon are often noise. A breakout then that closes back inside the Asian range proves it wrong.

Questions traders ask
What are AUD/NZD trading hours in the UK?
AUD/NZD typically trades from Sunday 22:00 to Friday 22:00 UK time, which is 5pm Sunday to 5pm Friday in New York. In the few weeks when the US and UK clocks change on different dates, the open and close are at 21:00 UK. It does not trade on Saturdays.
What is the best time to trade AUD/NZD?
Typically 22:00 to 07:00 UK, when New Zealand and Australia are open and their data and central bank decisions come out. The London and New York sessions are usually quiet for this pair.
Why does AUD/NZD move so little?
Australia and New Zealand are close trading partners with similar links to China and to risk mood, so most world news moves both currencies the same way. It mainly moves on differences between their central banks or data.
Is AUD/NZD good for range trading?
It has often traded in ranges for long periods, which is why range traders like it. Ranges do break, especially after a central bank surprise, so every range trade needs a clear level that proves it wrong.
How much is 1 pip on AUD/NZD worth?
On 1 standard lot of 100,000 Australian dollars, one pip (0.0001) is worth 10 New Zealand dollars. On 0.1 lots it is 1 New Zealand dollar and on 0.01 lots it is 0.10 New Zealand dollars. Your platform shows it in your account currency at the current rate.
