Clock changes

Forex hours follow New York time: the week opens on Sunday and closes on Friday at 5pm New York time. For most of the year that is 22:00 UK. The US and UK change clocks on different Sundays, so in the gap weeks it is 21:00 UK. In autumn 2026 the UK moved back on 25 October and the US on 1 November; in spring 2027 the US moves forward on 14 March and the UK on 28 March, so from 14 to 28 March the open, close and rollover are at 21:00 UK and US data at 8:30am New York time lands at 12:30 UK instead of 13:30. European releases (UK, eurozone and Swiss) stay at the same UK time all year, because those countries change clocks on the same dates as the UK. Japan does not change its clocks, so Tokyo data at 08:30 Tokyo time lands at 23:30 UK in winter and 00:30 UK in summer. Times on your broker's chart follow its server clock, which many brokers set to GMT+2 in winter and GMT+3 in summer so the daily candle starts at the 5pm New York rollover. Check your broker's own contract page.

What is CHF/JPY?

CHF/JPY shows how many Japanese yen one Swiss franc buys. If it reads 185.00, one franc costs 185 yen. It is unusual because both currencies are traditional safe havens, so in a sell off they can both be bought and the pair's direction depends on which is bought more.

Swiss and Japanese interest rates are both low by world standards, so CHF/JPY tends to move on changes in what traders expect from the Swiss National Bank and the Bank of Japan, and on any move by Japan to support the yen.

Contract facts

One point or pip

One pip is 0.01 (the second decimal place). Most brokers quote one more decimal, a tenth of a pip, often called a pipette or point.

Typical CFD lot

1 standard lot = 100,000 Swiss francs (the first currency in the pair). A mini lot (0.1) is 10,000 and a micro lot (0.01) is 1,000.

What a point is worth

One pip (0.01) on 1 standard lot is worth 1,000 yen (100,000 x 0.01). On a mini lot (0.1) it is 100 yen and on a micro lot (0.01) it is 10 yen. To see it in your account currency, your platform converts at the current rate.

Exchange futures

Most CHF/JPY trading happens in the spot market between banks and through CFDs. Cross rate futures volume is small, so CFD and spot prices are what most traders watch.

What moves CHF/JPY

SNB and the franc

The SNB has said it is willing to buy foreign currency when it thinks the franc is too strong, which can cap sharp franc rallies.

Bank of Japan moves

Any sign the Bank of Japan will raise rates further, or step in to support the yen, tends to strengthen the yen sharply.

Swiss inflation

Very low Swiss inflation leaves the SNB wary of a strong franc, which can limit how far CHF/JPY rises on franc buying.

Haven against haven

In market stress both currencies can be bought, so CHF/JPY's reaction to fear is less predictable than other yen pairs.

Japan intervention risk

If the yen weakens fast, Japan's finance ministry may buy yen, which can drop yen crosses sharply.

Scheduled events to watch

08:30, press conference 09:00 UK / 03:30 (04:30 in the gap weeks) NYSwiss National Bank rate decision

Only four a year, so each one carries weight; next on 10 December 2026, then 18 March 2027.

no fixed time, usually between about 02:30 and 04:00 UK / usually about 21:30 to 23:00 the evening before NYBank of Japan policy decision

07:30 UK / 02:30 (03:30 in the gap weeks) NYSwiss inflation (CPI)

Monthly from the Federal Statistical Office, usually early in the month; low Swiss inflation shapes how far the SNB will go to stop the franc rising.

23:30 the evening before (00:30 in UK summer) / 18:30 the evening before NYTokyo inflation (Tokyo CPI)

Released at 08:30 Tokyo time, an early monthly read on Japanese inflation that feeds Bank of Japan expectations.

What it tends to move with

EUR/JPY

CHF/JPY often moves with EUR/JPY, since the franc tends to track the euro.

USD/JPY

Moves in USD/JPY usually feed into CHF/JPY.

EUR/CHF

When EUR/CHF falls (franc stronger) and EUR/JPY holds, CHF/JPY tends to rise.

Tips for trading CHF/JPY

1

Do not assume a risk off fall

Unlike most yen pairs, CHF/JPY may not fall in a sell off. Let price confirm: a close below the previous day's low is needed before treating it as weak.

2

BoJ and SNB days

A close back into the pre-decision range after either bank speaks proves the first move wrong.

3

Mind the spread

Spreads are usually wider than on majors. Keep stops beyond structure.

4

Asian range break

A London close beyond the Asian range is a direction idea; a close back inside proves it wrong.
