Australia's clocks change in the opposite season to the UK's. Sydney is on daylight saving time from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, and the UK from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. So Sydney is 11 hours ahead of the UK in UK winter (now), 9 hours ahead in UK summer, and 10 hours ahead in the short gaps between (for example 4 to 25 October 2026, and 28 March to 4 April 2027). In UK summer every UK time on this page is two hours later. The SPI night session also changes its end time with US daylight saving: it ends at 08:00 Sydney time from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March, and 07:00 otherwise.
What is ASX 200 (AUS200)?
The S&P/ASX 200 tracks the 200 largest companies on the Australian Securities Exchange, weighted by the value of their shares available to trade. It is run by S&P Dow Jones Indices. Banks and miners make up a large share, so the index reacts to interest rates and to metal prices, especially iron ore.
Outside ASX share hours, AUS200 at your broker follows ASX SPI 200 futures, which trade in a day session and a long night session on ASX 24.
The trading sessions
The home session; the share open brings the day's first big moves, and Chinese data lands during it.
Night session futures follow Asian and European markets; moves are usually small.
US data and US indices often set the tone for the next Sydney open.
Contract facts
One point is a move of 1.0 in the index level (for example from 8,500.0 to 8,501.0).
Lot sizes differ between brokers. A common setup is 1 lot worth 1 Australian dollar per point. Check the contract specification in your platform.
On a CFD where 1 lot is worth 1 Australian dollar per point, a 20 point move on 1 lot is worth 20 Australian dollars. On one ASX SPI 200 futures contract a 1 point move is worth 25 Australian dollars.
ASX SPI 200 futures: 25 Australian dollars per index point, minimum move 1 point. Mini SPI 200 futures: 5 Australian dollars per point. Trading 09:50 to 16:30 and 17:10 to 07:00 or 08:00 Sydney time.

What moves ASX 200 (AUS200)
RBA rate decisions move bank shares, which are a large part of the index.
Big miners carry a heavy weight, so iron ore, copper and gold prices matter.
China is Australia's largest customer for raw materials, so Chinese data often moves miners.
Inflation and jobs figures shape what the RBA does next.
The previous US session often sets the direction for the Sydney open.
Moves in AUDUSD often reflect the same forces that drive miners and banks.
Scheduled events to watch
Eight meetings a year, announced at 14:30 Sydney time; moves banks and the Australian dollar.
Released at 11:30 Sydney time; guides RBA expectations.
Monthly employment figures at 11:30 Sydney time.
Chinese factory demand matters for Australian miners.
Hotter or cooler inflation changes what traders expect from US interest rates, which moves every risk market.
Eight scheduled meetings a year; the decision and the tone of the press conference reset US rate expectations.
What it tends to move with
Often moves the same way on risk and commodity news, though the link is loose.
The Sydney open often follows the previous US session.
Miner heavy, so stronger metal prices have tended to support the index.
Tips for trading ASX 200 (AUS200)
Trade the Sydney open
Mark the first 15 minute candle after the share open. A close beyond its high or low is a breakout idea; a close back inside proves it wrong.
Check the US close
If US indices closed strongly, look for AUS200 to hold above the previous Sydney close; a 15 minute close back below it proves the long idea wrong.
Mind the break
Futures pause between the day and night sessions, so prices can gap. Avoid tight stops across it; a gap through your level proves the idea wrong at once.
RBA days
Keep size small into 14:30 Sydney time. A post-decision move that reverses within two 5 minute candles is proved wrong.
Connect a cTrader account once and AUS200 appears on WickSpeak at your broker's own prices. Key levels show the previous day high and low, pivots, the open and average daily range levels with their distance in points. Every indicator writes a plain-English reading on the live candle, including what would prove it wrong, and a Playbook play can alert you, draw a trade plan, paper trade or, only on a play where you switched live trading on, place a trade inside the guardrails you set.
