Clock changes

Hong Kong does not use daylight saving time, so its exchange times never change. The UK does, so the UK times shift: from the last Sunday of October to the last Sunday of March (UK winter, now) the UK times on this page apply; in UK summer every UK time is one hour later. New York times are given for when New York is 13 hours behind Hong Kong (the US winter).

What is Hang Seng (HK50)?

The Hang Seng Index is run by Hang Seng Indexes Company and tracks the largest companies listed in Hong Kong, weighted by the value of their shares available to trade. Many of its biggest members are Chinese technology, finance and property groups, so it is often used as a read on China as well as Hong Kong.

Hang Seng Index futures trade on HKEX in a day session with a lunch break and an after-hours session that runs into the early morning. HK50 CFDs follow these futures, so their hours have gaps that most index CFDs do not.

The trading sessions

Moves continue into the close; mainland China's afternoon session overlaps.

09:00 to 19:00 (UK winter) UKAfter hours (Europe and US)

Contract facts

One point is a move of 1 in the index level (for example from 25,000 to 25,001). The index is quoted in Hong Kong dollars.

Typical CFD lot

Lot sizes differ between brokers. Many CFDs are priced in Hong Kong dollars per point; check the contract specification in your platform.

What a point is worth

What moves Hang Seng (HK50)

China policy

Stimulus, property support and rules for tech companies in mainland China move many of the biggest members.

Chinese data

Monthly figures for activity, trade and prices shape the outlook for Chinese firms listed in Hong Kong.

US rates

The Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar, so US interest rates feed straight into local borrowing costs.

Tech giants

A few large Chinese internet groups carry a heavy weight and can move the whole index.

US and China relations

Tariffs, export curbs and sanctions news often bring sharp moves.

Global risk mood

Overseas investors hold much of the market, so global selling or buying shows up quickly.

Tips for trading Hang Seng (HK50)

1

Trade the share open

Mark the futures range from 01:15 to 01:30 UK (winter). A 5 minute close outside it after the share open is a breakout idea; a close back inside proves it wrong.

2

Mind the breaks

HK50 stops at lunch and between sessions, so prices can gap. Avoid holding tight stops across 04:00 to 05:00 UK; a gap through your level proves the idea wrong at once.

3

Follow policy headlines

Big policy news from Beijing can move the index many points. Wait for a 15 minute close in the news direction; a close back through the pre-news level proves it wrong.

4

Use the previous close

The previous day's share close often acts as a reference. A rejection there is a reversal idea; a 15 minute close through it proves it wrong.
